ATTENTION!

It is that time of year again! We are reaching out to see if anyone would like to sponsor a dance category for our annual Powwow event July 28-30, 2023.

The Administration department has the payout amounts and categories.

You can sponsor the amount in full and/or co-sponsor with others. There is no limit on the number of categories you would like to sponsor.

Come see us at 505 S. Pioche Hwy in Ely or call us at (775) 289-3013 to reserve your spot.

You may also mail a check to our Finance Department at the address above and specify what you are sponsoring or donating towards.

We greatly appreciate your support!

Powwow

Join us.

On behalf of the Ely Shoshone Tribe and Marla Stanton, our Powwow Director, we are excited to announce the dates for our annual Powwow/Fandango! This year’s Head Staff includes Red Hoop (Host Drum), South Hill (Invited Drum), Chelsea Mohawk (Tabulator), and Harold Begaye (Emcee), and Kerrie Bedonie (Head Woman Dancer). We are also excited to announce that we’ll have an Arena Director, Spiritual Leader, Head Man, Head Teen Boy, Head Teen Girl, 5 Drum Groups, and a Leadman Gourd Dancer. The Dance Cateorgies will range from Tiny Tots (0-5) through Golden Age (55+).

The Ely Shoshone Powwow is a social event that is open to everyone. It’s a place to learn about Native culture and traditions, make new friends, eat some food, visit the vendors, and have a great time.

We ask that during the Powwow, please remember this is a traditional and sacred event. Please be respectful and follow proper etiquette.

Everyone Welcomed

The Ely Shoshone Tribe Powwow and Fandango is open to the general public. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy.

Etiquette.

Below is a list that will help to inform your visit to the Ely Shoshone Powwow;

Always stand respectfully during special songs. These include the Grand Entry, flag songs, veterans' songs, or any other song the MC designates. During these songs, folks should remove their hats.

The correct term for a dancer’s outfit is regalia not costume. Never touch a dancer’s regalia.

Many of the ornaments have religious meaning and are cherished family heirlooms.

Ask permission before taking photos of dancers in regalia.

If you see a lost or dropped feather, do not pick it up. Notify the nearest staff member or Arena Director immediately.

Pointing with the fingers is considered poor manners by some tribes. If you must point, use your head and nod in the direction, you wish to indicate.

Feel free to join in the inter-tribal dances by invitation of the MC.

Do not ever cross the arena floor! Do not go into drum circles. If a drum group is singing or about to sing, do not approach the drum. Stay on the perimeter of the arena floor.
